Character Name: Hellboy
Canon: Hellboy (Filmverse)
Canon Point: After the second movie
Character Age: 61, but physically and mentally in his 30s
History: Here
Division: Security. It's essentially what his job with the BPRD was and he's very good at it. He won't be particularly happy about having to do it, because he considered himself retired, but if people are in danger he won't be able to stop himself from helping them.
Edict: The one that feels the most appropriate is the Last Pilgrim. No matter how hard life gets, and it has gotten pretty hard, Hellboy keeps going. He doesn't give up.
Powers:
Superhuman durability: He's able to take a lot more damage than a normal human would be able to. He's not invulnerable or bulletproof, just tougher. He is, however, fireproof. The Right Hand of Doom is completely unbreakable.
Superhuman healing: He heals from normal injuries somewhat but not extremely faster than a human would. He cannot regrow lost body parts.
Superhuman strength: Nothing earth shattering, just generally much stronger than a human. He can hurl around somewhat heavy objects with minimal force, and the only issue he seems to have with his giant stone hand is that it's not nearly as dexterous as his left one.
The Samaritan: His gun. Made from blessed silver and iron from church bells with grips carved from pieces of the True Cross. It can use normal bullets, but is typically loaded with special bullets made by Hellboy himself that contain white oak, clover leaves, and silver shavings suspended in holy water.
Magic: Hellboy isn't capable of magic on his own, but given access to magical objects he's familiar with he's more than capable of using them. He's known to keep one on hand that allows him to temporarily raise a corpse and speak with it. However it doesn't allow them to do anything besides speak.
Anung Un Rama: This isn't likely to come up because Hellboy actively rejects that part of himself and is only included for sake of completion, but should he choose to embrace his role as the destroyer of worlds he becomes much stronger at the cost of a vulnerability to holy artifacts. The Right Hand of Doom can be used to summon or lock away the Ogdru Jahad, the dragon from the Book of Revelation.
(For the following questions, please go indepth into your character's motivations, personality, and suitability for this game. References to canon events to back up your point would be extra useful; the point is to get a good feel for your character and how they might function in this game. Ideally aim for 200-300 words per answer.)
As the Ascendants deemed your character worthy of being on this exploration voyage, what qualities did they observe in your character that they found appropriate for the mission?
For starters, his determination. Hellboy doesn't back down from a fight, even to his personal detriment. He's been knocked down, beat up, stabbed, shot at, and even killed but always gets back up for more.
This isn't just because he likes fighting, although there is a little bit of that, but because he sees it as his duty to defend those who can't defend themselves. Not just humans, either, but small animals like cats. Frankly, especially cats, as he takes in a lot of strays and even defended a box of kittens from a monster when the fight would've been so much easier had he abandoned them to their fate.
He's also supportive to anyone who feels like they don't quite fit in. This is mostly down to the fact that he never really has or feels like he ever will. He's a monster who fights other monsters, someone who for most of his life was barred from really interacting with the greater world outside that context, and yet managed to form a small, close family from others like him.
All of this comes from hope. Hope that he can eventually fit in and that the destiny every he fights insists he has isn't preordained. He believes he'll never fit in but still files down his horns in an effort to try.
What is your character's best quality, what is their worst, and how do these two qualities affect each other?
As said before, his determination. Hellboy doesn't back down from a challenge, no matter what it is. As he himself put it: "We don't take hints" Even if he knows it'll get him in trouble. He'll get knocked down and dragged around but he'll always get back up again. Or at least try to. He's just that stubborn and more than a little ornery. But it's usually focused on helping people and butting heads with people who he thinks makes that job harder. Yeah, stuff got smashed, yeah he was seen, but at least the only people who got hurt were the people who signed up for it.
Nothing makes this more clear than his determination to not embrace his destiny. He's been told time and time again that his ultimate fate is to bring about the apocalypse. It's what he was born for, what he was brought to Earth to do. And every time he refuses. No matter how hard it is to do in that moment.
It's also very often his worst trait as well. When he feels challenged he's prone to turning that challenge into a fight when diplomacy might've been the easier solution. Talking with Johann Krauss instead of fighting him every step of the way at the very least would've meant je didn't get his butt kicked by a set of possessed lockers. When there is an actual fight he often punches and/or shoots first when a more careful approach might have worked better and then keeps on punching and shooting even when it's taking a long time to work. He gets to the right solution eventually but likely would've gotten there quicker if he'd paused to think.
Your character's Edict appears in front of them, and agrees to grant them one wish: what does your character wish for?
He doesn't wish, at least not at first. His first instinct is to ask what the catch is. His father raised him on stories of mythology and lost civilizations, and he's been fighting creatures from those stories most of his life. One thing a lot of them have in common is that favors from gods aren't given freely. They come with strings attached.
If what they ask him for isn't too vague to trust or too onerous his request is to just let him go home. He's supposed to be retired from fighting monsters and he has twins coming. This whole journey wasn't part of the plan and he can't leave Liz to raise the twins on her own. Sure, Abe will help. He's family. But it's not fair to leave the job solely to him.
If that's out, and if it is the other thing he'd be most likely to bend the ear of a deity over (his destiny) is out too, then his request is pretty simple. A box of Cuban cigars. He's not getting what he most wants out of the deal so he might as well just ask for some creature comforts. There's not a lot else he wants that he thinks won't backfire in his face.
The Theorem has broken down, and is drifting toward a black hole. There is very little hope of outside rescue. What does your character do?
Try to get to get everyone who might have an idea of how to fix the ship together and make it their problem. Other than that there's not really all that much he can do beyond making sure they're still working on it. His skillset is fighting, paranormal investigation, building firearms, and shooting them. He's self-admittedly not even a very good shot.
He can, however, delegate and even with the skills he does have, like knowledge of the paranormal, he's been shown to hand the lead over to someone who's generally better at it like Abe.
That isn't to say he'll be nice about it. Hellboy can be kind of an asshole even at the best of times, and a stressful situation like falling into a black hole will only make that worse. As long as things are running smoothly he'll just be somewhat snarky but if gets derailed by things like accidents or petty arguments insults and potentially threats of violence will soon follow. Violence wouldn't, thankfully. That's reserved for people he sees as threats.
He's also self aware enough to at least apologize for the worst of it afterwards. He's only kind of an asshole, not a complete one.
